Visa Information System - VIS
Monday, 17 October 2011 09:13

A new central database, Visa Information System – VIS, started operations on October 11th.  Applications for visas for the Schengen area, including Iceland will be registered in this system, which the Directorate is now a part of.

Iceland‘s participation in this system is a part of the Schengen participation and respective legislation, e.g. the regulation on visas No. 1160/2010.

The VIS will not start operations on the same date in all Schengen consulates worldwide.  It has started in North Africa and will gradually be implemented worldwide.  Applicants must appear in person, be photographed and fingerprinted and the biometric information will be stored in the central system.  The VIS helps to avoid identity and visa fraud and will enhance security at the borders, as fingerprints will be checked ensuring that only the rightful visa holder is using the visa.
