Changes in documentation requirements

As of July 1, 2014, requirements for supporting documents for applications for residence permits or citizenship will change.  Applicants will then have to submit certified copies of birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, custody documents and divorce decrees, as applicable.  Originals of those documents will no longer be required.  Copies shall be certified by authorities in the applicant’s home country or by District Commissioners in Iceland.  Please note that originals will not be copied at the Directorate’s office.  Other documentation, such as bank statements or other financial documents, school documents and criminal records still need to be submitted as originals.

The Directorate has been informed of a website promising foreigners Icelandic citizenship, residence permit, visa or Icelandic passport for a fee.  The website is not operated by Icelandic authorities, the information is incorrect and it is not known who is behind the site.  Foreigners cannot obtain any rights through this website.  It is hoped that a police investigation will lead to the closure of this site.

Information on rights of foreigners in Iceland is only to be found on websites referred to on the Directorate‘s website.
