Residence permit for a child of a qualified professional
Please note that an application will not be processed until it has been paid for. See here.
Estimated application processing time for a residence permit is 90 days.
A foreign parent/guardian may apply for a residence permit for his child after the child arrives in Iceland. The residence permit is usually issued for one year at a time, but never for a longer period of time than the permit of the guardian (if applicable).
According to the Foreign Nationals Right to Work Act No. 97/2002, a child under the age of 18 may work temporarily without a work permit.
This type of residence permit counts towards permanent residence permits.
The following documentation must be submitted with the application:
If sufficient documentation has not been submitted, the application processing time will be considerably longer.
- A completed application form for a residence permit signed by the parent/guardian.
- One passport size photo (35mm-45mm) must be attached tho the application.
- A photocopy of the child’s passport. The validity of the passport must be at least three months beyond the proposed permit.
- Medical Insurance. A separate medical insurance is required for a child if the child is granted a permit at the same time as the parent/guardian. If the parent has been residing in Iceland for over 6 months, the child does not need a separate medical insurance.
- Housing Certificate The parent/guardian must prove that he has secure housing for the period of time being applied for.
- Support-The parent residing in Iceland shall submit proof of financial support for the child according to the minimal support guidelines set by the Ministry for Social Affairs, e.g. by submitting his/her paystubs for the past three months.
- Birth Certificate. A certified original of the child’s birth certificate is required.
- Custody documentation/Divorce Decree/Death Certificate. If only one of the child’s parents resides in Iceland, a certified original of the applicable official document must be provided with the application, to prove the legal custody of the child. If the parents share joint custody, a notarized statement from the other parent not residing in Iceland must also be provided, stating that said parent agrees to the child residing in Iceland. Custody documentation must be dated no earlier than 6 months prior to being submitted to the Directorate .

This documentation along with necessary supporting documents must have reached the Directorate before the child’s 18th birthday, according to para. 3 of Article 47 of the Regulation on Foreigners No. 53/2003. Otherwise the application will be processed as if the applicant was of legal age.
Attached to the application must be certified originals of documentation as applicable. The Directorate of Immigration reserves the right to ask for authentication of foreign documents, if necessary. Authentication can be either an „apostille“ from the applicant‘s home country, or a double authentication from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in the home country and the Embassy of that country in Iceland, or the embassy accredited to Iceland (if the country does not have an embassy in Iceland). This applies to criminal record checks, marriage certificates, birth certificates and any other certificates submitted with an application for a residence permit in Iceland. The Directorate requires that all foreign documentation issued in languages other than English or one of the Scandinavian Languages, must be translated by an accredited interpreter.
Futher information on apostille is available at http://hcch.e-vision.nl
If the application for a residence permit is approved, the foreigner needs to obtain a D-Visa in the closest embassy issuing such visas on behalf of Iceland. The application must state in which embassy the foreigner intends to obtain the visa. Check here for a list of embassies.
Upon arrival in Iceland, the foreigner shall:

If there are grounds for renewing the residence permit, it is done upon considering the application of the child’s parent/guardian. The permit is usually renewed for one year, but never for a longer period of time than the permit of the parent (if applicable). It is permissible to grant the child continued residency on the same conditions until the application has been processed.
