Residence permits for families

Family members may apply for a family reunification permit if the relative in Iceland is:

• • An Icelandic citizen
  • A citizen of Denmark, Norway, Sweden or Finland
  • A citizen of an EEA country
  • A foreigner residing in Iceland holding one of the following types of residence permit:
• A qulified professional in a specialized area;
• Athlete;
• Permanent resident;
• Doctorate student;
• B-or C-permit granted before the amendment on the Act on Foreigners, now holding a permit due to shortage of labourers B.

Furthermore, a family member must fulfill the requirements for support, medical insurance and secure housing.

The family member’s reason for applying for a residence permit in Iceland must correspond to the type of permit being applied for.
