Residence Permits
Residence Permits
A foreign citizen intending to stay longer than three months in Iceland must have a residence permit.
An EEA-national may stay for three months without any permit but if he is looking for employment e is allowed to stay in Iceland for up to six months without. If the individual resides longer in Iceland, he shall register his right to residency with the National Registry, Þjóðskrá (This does not apply to wage earners from Romania and Bulgaria, they therefore still need to apply for work and residence permits at the Directorate).
Citizens of countries outside the EEA who are family members of an EEA citizen shall apply for a residence card at the Directorate of Immigration within three months from their arrival in Iceland.
Stay in another country which is a member of the Schengen area is counted the same as a stay in Iceland. This does not apply to an EEA-national.
The purpose of an applicant’s stay in Iceland shall conform with the residence permit being applied for.
A foreign citizen shall have reached the age of 18 years before applying for a residence permit. A foreign citizen under the age of 18 can only be issued a residence permit according to his/her parent or legal guardian's residence permit. Please note that an application will not be processed until it has been paid for. See here.
If the applicant is not able to communicate directly with the Directorate, the applicant may authorize an individual residing in Iceland to follow up on the progress of his application. This authorization shall be in writing, you may access a form here.
