Citizens of Rommania and Bulgaria

An agreement on expanding the European Economic Area (EEA) to include Romania and Bulgaria was implemented on August 1, 2007. Please note that as per the adjustment period provision of the agreement, free flow of workers from those countries has been postponed until January 1, 2009. This entails than until January 1, 2009, wage-earners from Bulgaria and Romania will still need work permits and residence permits in Iceland, and their families do as well. Applications for work and residence permits for citizens of those countries have to have been approved before the applicant arrives in Iceland.
