Further to a news article in Morgunblaðið on September 21, 2006, “Hversu dýrt er að fæða?” (How expensive is it to give birth?), the Directorate would like to remind its clients of the necessity of submitting satisfactory documentation along with applications when applying for a residence permit. If a residence permit is granted, the process needs to be completed by the applicant by submitting a medical certificate and a notice from Þjóðskrá (the National Register of Persons) that his/her address in Iceland has been registered. Until this has been completed, the applicant does not have a valid residence permit.

The date of issue of a residence permit is the date the applicant has submitted a medical certificate and registered his residence in Iceland with Þjóðskrá. Only then is the permit issued and Þjóðskrá is at that point able to officially register the individual as being a legal resident of Iceland.

The Directorate has advertised a 90 day processing time for applications of citizens of countries outside the EEA. It is further stated on the Directorate’s web site that the advertised processing time is applicable provided that all necessary documents have been submitted with the application. Please note that if satisfactory documentation is not submitted with the application, the processing time will be prolonged accordingly.

Finally, the Directorate wants to reiterate the importance of applicants reading all relevant information with respect to applications on the Directorate’s web site before an application is submitted. The Directorate further has an e-mail address for enquiries; dvalarleyfi@utl.is.
