Miscellaneous Information
Residence permits for children under the age of 18
A foreign child under the age of 18 needs to have a residence permit in Iceland, the same as an adult. It is therefore necessary to apply for a residence permit for a child under the age of 18. Please note that a child can primarily only be granted a residence permit contingent on the residence permit of a legal guardian. Therefore, custody documents/divorce documents/death certificate, as applicable, must be submitted with the application for a residence permit for a child, to prove the legal guardianship, along with other required documentation. If the parents share joint custody and only one parent resides in Iceland, an original notarized statement of the parent not residing in Iceland wherein he/she approves that the child reside in Iceland with the other parent, must be submitted with the application. A residence permit for a child is usually issued for a period of one year, but never longer than the residence permit of the parent/guardian. For further information.
